Red Eye Photo
By: Donna Chapman
What a cute picture my daughter took of her and her friend,
unfortunately my daughter just happens to look possessed.
This is definitely not the way I see my little angel. If this has
ever happened to you, you know what a disappointment it can
be. Although there are many ways to get rid of "Red-Eye",
this way seems to give the most natural looking end result.
Step 1. Open the photo
you want to work with.
Step 2. Open a new layer
by clicking on the "Create
a New Layer" icon
(Arrow A).
Magnify the eye area by
800 to a 1000% by using
the "Zoom Tool"
(Arrow B).
Use the "Magnetic Lasso
Tool" (Arrow C) to
outline the area of the eye
you want to change. If
you scroll over and push
"Shift" at the same time
you can do both eyes.
Step 3. You can create
a "New Adjustment
Layer" by clicking on the
icon that is round and half
black and half white
(Arrow A).
This will open a drop
down menu that gives
several options. Scroll
down and select "Color
Balance" (Arrow B).
Step 4. On the "Color
Balance dialog box that
opens, click on
"highlights" (Arrow A).
Use existing slider bars
to adjust color towards
the natural color of
subject. (Arrow B).
The color adjustments
for highlights is very
subtle, watch carefully.
(Arrow C).
Make sure "adjustments
box" is active above the
1st layer (Arrow D).
Step 5. Open a new
layer by clicking on the
"Create a New Layer"
icon (Arrow A).
Make sure Layer 2 is
the active layer
(Arrow B).
Use "Magnetic Lasso
Tool" (Arrow C)
to outline the same
area in both eyes.
Remember to hold
down the "Shift" key
when outlining the
second eye.
Step 6. Go back to
the "New Adjustment
Layer" Icon (Arrow A).
This time click on "Hue
/Saturation". Inside
dialog box, adjust the
saturation and lightness
with slider bars.
(Arrow B)
This adjustment will be
much more dramatic
(Arrow C)
Again make sure it is
the adjustment layer that
is active, not the actual
layer (Arrow D).
Step 7. Open a new
layer by clicking on the
"Create a New Layer"
icon (Arrow A).
Make sure Layer 3 is
the active layer
(Arrow B).
Use "Magnetic Lasso
Tool" (Arrow C)
to outline the same
area in both eyes.
Remember to hold
down the "Shift" key
when outlining the
second eye.
Step 8. Go back to
the "New Adjustment
Layer" Icon (Arrow A).
Click on "Color
Balance", but this time
for shadows (Arrow B).
Use Slider bars to
adjust for natural colors
(Arrow C)
Again color shift will be
subtle, but this gives
much more life than just
painting a flat color
(Arrow D).
Step 9. Add a new
layer as before
(Arrow A).
Make sure foreground
color is white
(Arrow B)
Using the "Paintbrush
Tool" (Arrow C)
select a very small
brush, (I used 1 pixel
in size), and re-add
Highlight in both eyes.
(Arrow D).
Step 10. Even if you
were to look close at
a full size print, these
eyes would look much
more natural.
Go to the word
"Layer" across the top
menu, then down to
"flatten image" before
you save.
When you do save,
use the "Save As"
feature so you can
save this photo with
it's own name.
