Behind Window Photo

By: Tedric Garrison

Sometimes when taking pictures of objects (windows for example)
the subject comes off as cold and lifeless.  What better way to add
life to a picture, than to add a life into the picture?  Of course this
can be done with other objects as well, but for now let's just start
by adding a lady in the window.

Better Photo Tips | Photoshop Tips | Photo 176    Step 1.  Open the two
     photos you want to
     combine.

Better Photo Tips | Photoshop Tips | Photo 177    Step 2.  Open the "Magnetic

Lasso Tool" (Arrow A).

Using that tool** draw
      around the part of the
      subject you want to
      keep (Arrow B).

**Other photoshop tips
      have already shown
      several ways to separate
      subject from background,

choose your favorite.

    Tool" (Arrow A) click on
    your newly highlighted
    subject (hold in your left
    mouse button), and drag
    it onto your desired
    background.

When you let go of the
image it will have a light
     rectangle around the
     subject with small
     squares placed on the
     corners and sides.

     These smaller squares are
     called "handles" (Arrow B).

Better Photo Tips | Photoshop Tips | Photo 179    Step 4.  Enlarge the over-
    all image size (background
    photo) using the "Zoom
    Tool" so you can see
    more detail.

     Using one of the corner
     "handles" on your image
     will allow you to shrink
     the image without
     distorting it. (Arrow A)

      Place the image inside
      the window frame.

    Step 5.  Open the "Layers"
    dialog box, and make sure
    the background layer is
    selected (Arrow A).

     Then using the "Marquee
     Tool" (Arrow B), draw
     a box around the window
     itself (just the glass area).
     (Arrow C).

This will create a new layer
     directly above the back-
     ground layer.

Better Photo Tips | Photoshop Tips | Photo 181    Step 6.  Drag the new
layer to the top (Arrow A)

    Click on "Opacity" to
reveal a slider bar that let's
    you adjust the transparency
of the level you just placed
    on top (Arrow B).

     Make sure you can see
     both the subject and the
     window cross bars.
     (Arrow C).

    Step 7.  Click the layer
with the woman on it to
    make it the active layer.
    (Arrow A).

    Add a layer mask by
    clicking the icon of a
    dark rectangle with a
    white circle. (Arrow B)
    Make sure the mask
    itself is now active,
    NOT the lady.

    Using the "Paint Brush
    Tool" (Arrow C) select
a small brush to paint in
    the window panes.

    Step 8.  Make sure the
    Mask is active (Arrow A)

    Make sure black is the
    foreground color.
    (Arrow B)

    Select a small solid brush
    size using the "Paint Brush
    Tool" (Arrow C)

    Now carefully paint back
    in the window pane
    frames into the picture.
    (Arrow D)

Better Photo Tips | Photoshop Tips | Photo 184    Step 9.  If you make a
    mistake you can also
    "clean up" the mask by
    reversing the foreground
    color.

     Make sure you are
     painting on the Mask
     area (Arrow A).

     Change the foreground
    color to white (Arrow B).

      This will allow you "un
      paint" any areas where
      you may have had extra
      black (Arrow C).

Better Photo Tips | Photoshop Tips | Photo 185    Step 10.  Go to the word
    "Layer" across the top
    menu, then down to
    "flatten image" before
     you save.

     When you do save, use
     the "Save As" feature
     so you can give your
     finished project it's own
     new name.
