Switching Heads Photo
By: Tedric Garrison
The advantage of taking multiple shots of the same pose for
a family group pose is to avoid closed eyes and bad expressions.
The disadvantage is what happens when the customer likes
different parts from the different poses shot? No fear, photoshop
to the rescue.
Step 1. Open the two photos you want to work with. They
should be very similar, but do not have to be exact.
Step 2. Using the Zoom Tool enlarge both photos to get a better
view of the images you want to change. (Arrow A) shows the
original not so complimentary photo. (Arrow B) shows the same
subject after a corny joke by the photographer.
Step 3. Open the "Magnetic
Lasso Tool" (Arrow A).
Keep in mind, it is not the
first tool in this group. You
may have to open the group
by clicking on the small
black triangle in the lower
right hand corner of the
current icon. If so, scroll
down and select it from
the options shown
(Arrow B).
Using that tool, draw
around the part of this
subject you want to
keep (Arrow C).
Step 4. Using the "Move Tool" (Arrow A) hold down the left
mouse button to drag the head from the selected photo
(Arrow B) to the original photo.
Step 5. When you first
drag the head over there
is a box around the new
layer.
If the image does not line
up perfectly (Arrow A)
don't panic. Drag one of
the points on the corner
of the box (Arrow B) to
enlarge this section and
keep the same proportion.
"Deselect" the area by
going to word "Select"
across the top menu,
then down to "Deselect."
Step 6. After having
adjusted head size, there
may still be small areas
you need to blend.
Go to the "Smudge
Tool" (Arrow A). This
is not the default tool
in this group. You may
have to open the group
first, then select this tool
(Arrow B).
Using a soft edge brush
go over any area that still
has an obvious edge.
(Arrow C) this will blend
the top layer down to the
layer underneath.
Step 7. By adding this head, you have added another layer so go
to "Layers" and down to "Flatten Image", before you save. When
you do save, use the "Save As" feature so you can rename your
new creation under it's own name.
