Framed Photo Highlight

By: Donna Chapman

This is one of those effects that could come in very handy if you
are into scrap booking.  In the image below, it was the brother
and sister that caught my eye first.  I was limited to how close
I could get; and although I could have just cropped tighter I
wanted to try something new and different.

Step 1.  Open the photo you
    want to work with.

    Step 2.   Using the Marquee
    Tool (Arrow A), select an
area that you want to draw
    attention to (Arrow B).

Go to the "Foreground/
     Background Color Tool"
     (Arrow C) and select any
     color other than white for
     the foreground.

Step 3.  Create a new layer
by clicking on the new layer
     icon (Arrow A) it looks
like a piece of paper with
     one corner bent up.

     Using the paint bucket tool
(Arrow B) fill in the newly
     selected area (Arrow C).

     selected, click the "Add a

      and click on the word
      "stroke".

Step 5.  The above step
     will open the "Layer Style"
     dialog box.

Within this box change
      the color in the "color
      box" to white (Arrow A).

Use the "Size" slider bar
     (Arrow B) to create a
      frame around the selected
      area (Arrow C).

      Suggested size is between
      15 to 20 pixels depending

on the size of your
      original image.

Step 6. Click once on the
     area filled in with color.
     (Arrow A)

      In the "Layers" dialog
      box, click on the section
      beside the word "Fill"
      (Arrow B).

This will bring up a small
slider bar so that you can
adjust the fill setting all the
      way down to zero.

Step 7. Click on the "New
    Adjustment Layer" icon
    (Arrow A) on the drop

    Within the "Hue/Saturation"

dialog box, use the
     "Saturation" slider bar to
      set the saturation down
      to -100. (Arrow B)

This will take all the color
     out of your selected area
     only. (Arrow C).

Step 8. On the layer that
    is labeled "Hue/Saturation"

click on the icon on the

    On the keyboard hold
the "ctrl" + the "I" key
    at the same time.  This
    will "inverse" the colors,
so that only what is in
    your selected area will
    have color (Arrow B).

Step 9.  Select the layer
     you originally filled with
     color (Arrow A).

     Notice that the box

     is now open (Arrow B).

    Click once and a small
    chain icon will show up,
    indicating it is now linked
    to the layer below.

    You can now push, pull,
