Photo Eraser Tool

By: Donna Chapman

One of the joys of photoshop is that often there are several different
ways to receive the same result.  When it comes to separating the
subject from the background, one of the easiest I have found is
     using the "Background Erase Tool".

    Step 1.  Open the photo
    you want to work with.

     "Eraser Tool"

(Arrow A) and click
     on the small black
      triangle in the lower
      left corner.

      This will bring up the
      other options in that
      group. Select the 2nd
      icon down called: the
      "Background Eraser
       Tool" (Arrow B).

Step 3.  Use the "Zoom
    Tool" (Arrow A) to get
    in closer to your work.

Go to the secondary
    menu across the top
    and set the "Tolerance"
    (Arrow B) to 20%.

     The "Background Erase
     Tool" looks like a circle
with a "+" sign in the
     center. Keep the "+"
     sign outside the main
     image to remove the
     background. Notice
     the circle can overlap
     and not effect the main
     image. (If  it DOES,
     then lower tolerance.)

    Step 4.  Once you have
    gone all the way around
    the main image, you can
    change back to the
    regular "Eraser Tool"
    (Arrow A).

At this point it will be
     easier to change your
     brush size (Arrow B)
     to something larger.

     Continue to erase the
     background (Arrow C)
     until complete.

    what you want to do
    next will determine
    how you use the "Save
    As" function.

    If you want the
    background to stay
    transparent, you need
    to save as either a
    "Gif" file or a "PDF"
     file.

     If your main concern
     is just the subject
     itself, then save as a
     "JPEG" file.  (The
     Background will turn
     to a solid white.)
